  • What to expect at my appointment
(CHILD APPT). For the majority of our appointments, your child will go back with the doctor (or her assistant) on their own to start testing. We know this can seem unusual, but we have been doing this for a long time and the kids do great. They will answer questions about themselves (generally true/false questions) that will be read to them. They will complete basic screenings for problem solving skills, academic skills, and attention/focus (if applicable). They will earn a prize for working on all these tasks. While they are working on their tasks, the parent will either be completing additional parent forms or meeting with the doctor. It is important that a parent/guardian is present and prepared to answer questions regarding the child's history, current concerns, and other areas. Testing will generally take between 90 min to 2 hours. Additional appointments are sometimes needed. (AUTISM APPT). These appointments can vary depending on the child's age and developmental level. The parent likely will accompany their child for the evaluation portion and observe. Their child then will typically have time to play while supervised by an assistant so the parent interview can be completed. Sometimes, it might be necessary for the parent to return for a follow-up appointment to complete this interview. Testing will generally take between 2 hours to 2.5 hours. Additional appointments are sometimes needed. (ADULT APPT). A clinical interview will be completed to help understand current concerns and plan for appropriate testing options. You will then have several forms to complete on your own, one form to be completed by someone that knows you well (this can be emailed to you), and other test measures as deemed appropriate. Testing will generally take between 90 min to 2 hours. Additional appointments are sometimes needed.
  • Can I do a self-pay option for my evaluation?
Yes, definitely. We offer discounts for cash payment. We accept cash, checks, and most credit cards
  • Do you accept insurance?
We accept a few insurance plans including Superior medicaid. Please call our office and we can check your specific insurance and provide additional information. Each insurance plan is different but they generally will only cover evaluations they deem “medically necessary.” Insurance plans will not cover testing for learning issues or learning disabilities. Insurance also frequently will not cover testing for issues such as depression or anxiety unless counseling services have already been attempted. We would need to check your plan to find out your eligibility. Please note, eligibility is not a guarantee of payment and if your insurance company denies the claim after testing, you will be responsible for the full payment.
  • Will I continue with you for therapy after my evaluation?
No, we are an assessment only practice, but we can provide you a referral list.
  • Should I have my child/myself evaluated for depression/anxiety?
Most of the time your insurance company will require you try alternative services first, primarily therapy. If you have not found therapy effective, sometimes an evaluation will be approved but we would need to check with your insurance company.
  • Will you prescribe medication?
No. Psychologists do not prescribe but we can assist you with recommendations regarding diagnosis that you can then take back to your primary care doctor.
  • What if I need to reschedule?
Please call 48 hours in advance to reschedule. Appointments missed without calling or cancelled late might not be eligible to be rescheduled.
  • What if my child is sick the day of the appointment?
Children who are sick will not be seen and you will be asked to reschedule. Please call 48 hours in advance if possible to prevent a delay in rescheduling your appointment and to allow us time to fill the appointment from our wait list.
  • ADHD evaluations
We offer ADHD evaluations for ages 7 - 40. We do not offer evaluations for children under age 7. We offer re-evaluations for ADHD for ages over 40 (i.e., you were diagnosed when you were a child and need the diagnosis re-evaluated).
  • Autism evaluations
We currently offer autism evaluations for children. We do not do evaluations for adult autism. We have a waiting list but you can be added to this list (and we will check your insurance coverage) by completing the Appointment request form and emailing it to office@driskillbates.com.
  • Learning disability testing
We offer learning disability testing but it is not covered by insurance and would be cash pay only. We recommend talking to your school regarding options for learning disability testing. We do not offer specific dyslexia testing.
